BRUSH WITH DEATH: PATIENT SURVIVES AFTER SHARP ROD PIERCES NECK
The department of ENT and Head Neck Surgery of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital have performed a life saving surgery on a patient, granting him a second life.
A 45 year old male, resident of Manglaur, Uttar Pradesh was working as a daily wage labourer at a construction site when he was accidentally impaled through neck by an iron rod while unloading the truck
The patient was immediately rushed by his coworkers to a nearby local hospital on 04/05/25 but the patient was referred to a higher centre considering the difficulties and complications the surgery posed.
Patient was then brought to Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital emergency in condition of shock due to excessive blood loss and was admitted in ENT ward. The patient was planned for neck exploration on emergency basis. During the procedure, surgeons identified that normal anatomy of neck was distorted. His skin & neck muscles were torn and there was a huge clot in neck. On removal of clot it was seen that there was approx. 5cm dent in Internal Jugular Vein (major vessel which circulates blood from brain to heart); also with it the Recurrent laryngeal nerve was also found to be torn.
Dr Tripti M Mamgain HOD, Deptt. of ENT stated that neck trauma presenting with major vessels injury is a rarity and management requires proficient surgical expertise. If left untreated it could be fatal to life due to excessive blood loss and can lead to serious complications such as stroke, pulmonary embolism or even death of patient.
Dr Tripti M Mamgain & Dr Arvind Varma proceeded with the necessary repair, managing a complex situation with precision.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts and clinical expertise of Dr Tripti M Mamgain professor & HOD, Dr Arvind Varma professor and their team, the operation was completed successfully. The team included Dr Sharad Hernot, Dr Rishabh Dogra, Dr Fatma Anjum, Dr Harshit Gupta, Dr Arushi Kothari. Anaesthesia team included Dr Rubina Makkar and Dr Tamish, Junior resident. OT staff included sister Dolma and Pinky.
Urgency shown and with the expertise Dr Tripti M Mamgain provided, the patient is safe and currently stable and is being discharged after careful observation.
