Introduction

Neurosurgery is branch of medicine that deals with the surgical treatment of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system.

The management of Neurosurgery patients at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital began in 2003 . Neurosurgery Department was officially established on August 26, 2019. Currently, the department is staffed with 2 Professors, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Assistant Professor, 1 post DNB Senior resident, 2 MCh trainee Senior Residents, and a cohort of junior residents and interns.

The MCh Neurosurgery super-specialty course was introduced on February 27, 2023. Presently, the department handles approximately 1,800 surgeries annually and provides outpatient care to around 7,500 patients each year. Our causality services are available round -the -clock for diagnosis and early management of neurological emergencies.

Each year, we accept 1 resident into our program to get personalised mentorship from our distinguished faculty. As a leading centre for neurosurgical care, our department is also deeply involved in research and education of future neurosurgeons.

The department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including Neuronavigation, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, CUSA, Microscope, NeuroEndoscope, and capabilities for minimally invasive spine surgery.

In addition to its clinical excellence, the Neurosurgery Department has made significant contributions to global research in brain and spine surgery.

One notable innovation is the development of the cost-effective “Rubberband Exposure Technique” for lumbar microdiscectomy, which has gained worldwide recognition. In brain surgery, the department has also conducted groundbreaking research on the role of the vascularized pericranial flap in improving outcomes for traumatic brain injury, known as the "CANDID study."
Both of these research efforts have been published in top-ranking neurosurgery journals.

Furthermore, the department has developed a new and innovative neurosurgical instrument that enhances exposure during brain and spine surgeries. This instrument has been granted a patent by the Patent Office, Government of India (Patent Number 519388).

The department also fosters interdisciplinary collaborations with various specialties, including Neuro-oncology, Neuroradiology, Neuropathology, Neurocritical Care, and Neuro-ophthalmology.
