" Total mastectomy with autologous whole breast reconstruction performed during a complex five-hour surgery "
Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital has recorded a historic achievement in the field of breast cancer treatment. For the first time in Uttarakhand, after completely removing the breast of a woman suffering from multicentric breast cancer, a successful reconstruction was carried out by creating a new breast using the patient’s own muscles and skin. This complex surgery was performed under the leadership of the hospital’s senior cancer surgeon, Dr. Ajit Tiwari.
In medical science, this condition is known as multicentric breast cancer, in which multiple cancerous lumps develop in different parts of the breast. In such cases, partial surgery is not possible, and a total mastectomy (complete removal of the breast) becomes necessary. In this case, along with total mastectomy, autologous whole breast reconstruction was performed, in which tissues from the patient’s own body were used to reconstruct the breast.
During the extremely complex surgery, which lasted nearly five hours, special attention was paid to the size, balance, and natural appearance of the breast during reconstruction. Notably, until now, such surgeries have generally involved the use of silicone breast implants, which carry risks such as infection, implant failure, hardening of the breast, pain, and the possible need for repeat surgeries in the future.
According to Dr. Ajit Tiwari, “Breast reconstruction using the patient’s own body significantly reduces the risk of implant-related complications. The breast looks more natural, sensitivity is better preserved, and long-term outcomes are safer.” This surgery demands a very high level of expertise, including in-depth anatomical knowledge, microsurgical skills, and extreme precision. Only a few medical centers in the country currently offer breast cancer reconstructive surgery at this advanced level.
This technique offers a new ray of hope, especially for young female patients who wish to lead a normal and confident life even after overcoming cancer.
Dr. Ajit Tiwari believes that reconstructive breast surgery is not merely a physical treatment, but is also directly linked to a woman’s mental well-being, self-esteem, and social confidence. Modern breast cancer treatment now prioritizes not only saving lives but also improving a woman’s quality of life.
This achievement by Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital is being regarded as a major step toward patient-centric, modern, and compassionate cancer care, and is expected to become a source of inspiration and confidence for many women in Uttarakhand in the times to come.
