Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital’s Breast Cancer Surgeon Gives New Lease of Life to Woman

  • - 12.5 kg Tumor Removed from Woman’s Breast
  • - Small Breast Lump Turned into a Dangerous Football-Sized Tumor

The dedicated efforts of the breast surgery team at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital have resulted in a remarkable medical success. A unique case at the hospital highlighted how neglecting a small breast lump can lead to a serious and life-threatening condition. Dr. Nilkamal Kumar, Head of the Department of Breast Surgery, along with his team, successfully removed a giant 12.5-kilogram football-sized Phyllodes Tumor from the breast of a 35-year-old woman, giving her a new lease on life.

A notable aspect of the nearly four-hour complex surgery was that the doctors were able to preserve the natural contour of the breast while successfully removing the massive tumor. Following the operation, the patient made a complete recovery and was discharged from the hospital just three days later.

Senior Breast and Endocrine Surgeon Dr. Nilkamal Kumar explained that this condition is known in medical science as a Phyllodes Tumor. Although it is a rare form of breast tumor, such cases are being successfully treated at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital. The hospital’s super-specialty breast department is equipped with a team of highly skilled and experienced specialists. As a result, the department frequently receives complex cases, including patients who have undergone surgery elsewhere or experienced recurrence of the tumor after previous treatment at other hospitals.

He further explained that Phyllodes Tumor is an extremely rare breast tumor that grows much more rapidly than ordinary breast lumps. It is not possible to determine whether the tumor is cancerous (malignant) based solely on its size or initial examination. Its true nature can only be confirmed through a biopsy.

According to Dr. Kumar, the patient initially developed a small lump in her breast and sought treatment locally. However, due to fear, hesitation, and lack of awareness, she delayed consulting a specialist for a considerable period. During this time, she also tried homeopathic and Ayurvedic treatments, but without significant benefit. As time passed, the lump grew rapidly and, within a few weeks, transformed into a football-sized giant tumor.

As the tumor continued to enlarge, the patient began experiencing breathing difficulties, persistent pain, sleep disturbances, and severe challenges in carrying out routine daily activities. She also started avoiding social gatherings and felt increasingly uncomfortable in public. The continuously growing tumor caused significant mental stress and anxiety, leaving her fearful that it might be cancerous and permanently affect her normal life.

Dr. Nilkamal Kumar emphasized that the greatest challenge associated with Phyllodes Tumors is their tendency to recur locally. Therefore, such complex cases should always be managed under the supervision of breast specialists. Timely diagnosis, appropriate surgical intervention, and regular follow-up can significantly reduce the risk of recurrence and ensure better long-term outcomes for patients.
